Rehearsals

We'll make a start to familiarise ourselves with the script and our fellow cast members shortly after the dust has settled on She Stoops to Conquer. A full rehearsal schedule will begin early in the new year. Rehearsals are likely to be on Tuesday and Thursday, but this will depend on the availability of key cast members.

Cast role thumbnails

Barbara – a middle-class, middle-aged lady. This is a substantial role requiring a convincing portrayal of the full spectrum of emotions. The role was originally played by Judi Dench in the original production, if that gives you the picture. Please step forward if you are an experienced actress, or someone up for a challenge and willing to put in the hard work to take your their acting to the next level.

Bob – her husband. A strong support to Barbara, but so much more than just a supporting role. He faces the same dilemmas as Barbara, but deals with them differently, so must demonstrate affection, but also tension when they disagree.

Julie – their daughter, a teenager, with all that entails: School, homework, boyfriend and the occasional ride on a motorbike, unbeknown to her mother. She's not a rebellious teenager but frequently clashes with her mother's view of the world.

Helen – a middle-aged lady with a Canadian/American accent. Yes, we know that there is a difference, but all will become clear. She is vivacious, over-energetic, never static, a perpetual whirlwind with a kind heart. She is extremely friendly to the point of being irritating. But we still love her.

Peter – her husband, also with a Canadian/American accent. He is the much quieter half of the duo and is in Helen's shadow, but we can see that he is not under-the-thumb. He is a respected professional and knows his mind.

Stewart – a slightly mysterious Scotland Yard (or possibly MI5?) inspector. Another substantial role. Well spoken, authoritative, and knowledgeable, but we are soon aware that he doesn't always tell us everything that he knows.

Thelma – A Scotland Yard junior officer acting as an observer. Probably in her late twenties or early thirties. She is possibly ex-army and carries a motorcycle helmet. She is old-enough to be a career woman, but young enough to befriend and confide in Julie.

Sally – Another Scotland Yard junior officer acting as an observer. This is a very small role, ideally suited to someone wanting to get their first stage experience, or could be played by one of the stage crew. The role of Sally has been written as female but could equally be cast as a male with a name change.

Booking tickets

When checking out, we recommend the 'Fast Checkout' option followed, if necessary, by 'Checkout as guest (you may need to scroll down to find this)'. If you are an unregistered customer, you do not need to create an account, in fact it's probably easier if you don't.

If you want to create an account, click on one of the sign-up options shown; the 'email' option is possibly the easiest. Be aware that your basket will time out after 15 minutes (there is a 'time remaining' indicator top right of the screen).

Whichever checkout method you choose, please complete the 'Full name' field with your first and last names only. Please do not include your title or middle names.

APS Cancellation Policy

If you need to move your seat or seats from one performance to another of the same production, we can do this very easily for you at no additional cost to you. There is no need to cancel and rebook. Just contact the APS Box Office. Note that the change can only be to seats in the same area as the seats in the original order.

If you are unable to attend an event for which you have purchased tickets, we would be grateful if you would let us know as soon as possible, so that we can cancel your order and release the seats. However, please note that we do not, under most circumstances, offer refunds if a ticket order is cancelled after it has been processed.

When your ticket order has been cancelled, if the seats are resold and the performance is sold out, we will offer you a discount code that can be used to purchase tickets for another production. The value of the discount code will be the value of the tickets you cancelled, less a £2.00 admin fee per ticket. The discount code will be time limited and usually valid only for a maximum of six months.

If you order a ticket by mistake and inform the APS Box Office within 24 hours of your purchase that you wish to cancel it, we will offer you a discount code as described above.

If a production is cancelled by APS, you will receive a full refund for the amount you paid.

Pack of Lies

The Jacksons are a nice middle-aged English couple with a teenage daughter. Their best friends are their Canadian neighbours, the Krogers.

All is blissful in their world until a detective from Scotland Yard asks to use their house as an observation base to investigate suspicious activity in their street. The Jacksons become more and more put out as Scotland Yard's demands on them increase. They are really put to the test when the detective reveals that the Krogers are actually Soviet spies and he asks the Jacksons to help set a trap. Should they betray their friends?

Pack of Lies is based on the true story of a network of Soviet espionage active in 1960 known as the Portland Spy Ring, which had threatened to undermine sensitive Royal Navy submarine research. At the heart of the play lies the dilemma facing ordinary people of whether or not personal bonds between friends should be stronger than bonds with the state.

A gripping drama with heart, not to be missed.
